How can lab research become more sustainable? In a Comment in Nature Reviews Neuroscience, Harvard neuroscientists Joseph Zak, Jenelle Wallace and Venkatesh Murthy describe their experience of an inter-laboratory competition designed to stimulate behavioural change to reduce energy usage. They also highlight various other practicable ways in which labs can limit their carbon footprint and unnecessary waste, and point out that implementing such changes need not impact scientific output — and, in some cases, may even improve it.
