Springer Nature and the SDGs

Springer Nature is committed to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to opening up research and to sharing it widely so that it reaches the audiences that need it to address grand global challenges. Since 2015 we have published nearly 400,000 articles and chapters on SDG-related topics such as health, poverty, justice and biodiversity.

What is SDG 3?

The Health and Well-being for All channel is dedicated to raising awareness for research that addresses Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3). SDG 3 is focused on "Good Health and Well-being". It is one of the 17 SDGs established by the United Nations in 2015 and aims to "ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages."

The United Nations has set targets in these areas:

3.1. Maternal mortality
3.2. Neonatal and child mortality
3.3. Infectious diseases
3.4. Non-communicable diseases, including mental illness
3.5. Substance abuse
3.6. Death and injury from road traffic accidents
3.7. Sexual and reproductive health
3.8. Universal health coverage
3.9. Environmental health

Aims of the SDG 3 & Me blog series

If you are making a contribution towards tackling the SDG 3 targets, you can use the SDG 3 & Me interview blogs to share what you are doing and to discuss how your work is helping to get closer to achieving these global objectives.

We want to help raise awareness by spotlighting people from across all areas whose work relates to the SDG 3 targets, not just those who work directly in health or health-related research, but also those who work in community groups, with or for funders or policy makers, as well as those who are involved in other types of organizations or groups that are helping to promote, or make improvements in, health and well-being.

SDG 3 is quite a broad SDG and has a lot of targets. For this series, we decided to focus on three targets to help get things started, although we know that many of the targets will overlap.

  • Target 3.2 – By 2030 end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, with all countries aiming to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1,000 live births.
  • Target 3.3 – By 2030 end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases.
  • Target 3D – Strengthen the capacity of all countries, in particular developing countries, for early warning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks.

Format/structure of the community/posts

When potential contributors/organizations are identified, you will be invited to answer a series of questions that provide a description of your (and your organization’s) work and how it contributes to the SDGs, along with some background information on why you feel it is making a difference. You can follow the Q&A format or write a standard blog post if you prefer. The aim is to create a more complete picture of people who are involved in work that relates to the SDGs in any way.
