The work life of a researcher working sustainable development can be frustrating at times, owing to widespread pay-wall publishing, poor data reporting practices, and in parts low standards for conducting sound and reproducible research.

Thank you for this very useful Commentary. As a sustainability researcher, I share your concerns and appreciate your thoughts. I can't help but notice, however, that your article is published behind a pay-wall and I can't access it (I read the first page only); kind of ironic isn't it?
Dear Maria,
thank you for your interest in this work! In this case, I needed to balance the visibility offered by NatSust with the wish to have it openly accessible, and went for the former.
I don't even have access myself, as our uni understandably doesn't want to pay the ca. 4000 EUR/yr subscription fee for every new journal that Springer-Nature invents.
